Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Oxygen is essential to life and critical to everyone’s health. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the use of intermittent, high-dose oxygen as a drug. By giving pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, HBOT delivers a massive influx of oxygen to virtually every area of the body. This is true even for areas of poor blood flow, and results in remarkable benefits that cannot be achieved with any other therapy.
What are the benefits of using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
By administering pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, ten times the amount of oxygen can be delivered further and deeper into the tissues and cells. This increase in oxygen saturation can provide profound therapeutic benefits to the body which include:
- Immediate support by forcing oxygen into oxygen starved tissue
- Reduction of inflammation and edema (tissue swelling)
- Production and mobilization of stem cells to repair organs and tissues
- Improved white blood cell function
- Increased growth of new blood vessels and capillaries
- Fights infection by creating a hostile environment for bacteria which thrive and cause infection in the absence of oxygen.
What are the indications for use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
The use of HBOT is becoming increasingly common as a growing body of research and evidence shows it to be beneficial in a wide range of clinical conditions. These include, but are not limited to; stroke, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, Lyme disease, cerebral palsy, autism, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, diabetic problem wounds, carbon monoxide poisoning, and many others.
How is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Administered?
In our facility, patients are treated once a day, Monday through Friday, for 60-90 minutes in single-person hyperbaric oxygen chambers. During the session the patient wears 100% cotton scrubs or a gown provided by the Institute. HBOT is a safe and comfortable treatment and patients typical relax during their treatments by watching a movie or just resting while in the chamber. A Registered Nurse and Certified Hyperbaric Technician are present at all times. The number of treatments varies depending on diagnosis and will be determined during a consultation with our Medical Director. The average number of treatments is 40 over 8 weeks. Dr. Cramer will provide ongoing support and consultation with the patient throughout the treatment process.
